The method involves driving two shift clutches (19, 20) of a switching coupling unit (13) relative to each other in a reverse rotational direction. A part of a drivetrain (24) lying between one of the clutches (19) and a gear wheel is slowed down during a gear change at an increased gear speed or during insertion of gears (1-6) in a standing vehicle by the other clutch (20) until rotary speed difference falls below a predefined value for the gear wheel. The latter clutch is propelled against the former clutch.
