A cutting insert comprises a polygonal member having top and bottom surfaces, at least one cutting corner and at least one cutting edge adjoining the corner, a longitudinal depression extending alongside the cutting edge on the top surface and a corner depression in the longitudinal depression, the longitudinal and corner depressions respectively forming main and secondary chip breakers. With a polygonal shaped member a plurality of cutting comers and edges may be formed with a main chip breaker along each edge and secondary chip breaker at each comer. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10 the insert is triangular with a main chip breaker 23 and a secondary (corner) chip breaker 21. The chip breaking depressions may be spaced from the cutting edges and corners by a flat or bevelled land or they may be formed directly from the cutting edge or corner.
