1283707 Moisture-polymerizable mixtures GURIT AG 4 Sept 1969 [4 Sept 1968] 43757/69 Heading C3P A polymerizable mixture which is stable in the absence of moisture comprises (A) at least one free radical addition polymerizable liquid, (B) at least one initiator system effecting the formation of free radicals in the presence of moisture and (C) a desiccant, the mixture being polymerizable by the presence of ambient moisture without the addition of liquid water or further components. Constituent (A) preferably comprises one or more monomers and/or prepolymers, but an additional polymeric component may be present if it is soluble in the monomer or prepolymer, and may be, for example, either copolymerizable with (A) or a polymer of (A). Component (B) preferably comprises an inorganic peroxide and an accelerator which is a complex cobalt or iron compound soluble in the organic system, e.g. cobalt naphthenate. Examples of (C) are molecular sieves, BaO, CaC 2 . The system is caused to polymerize by exposure to ambient moisture. Fillers and other agents in a dry state, may also be added. The mixtures are made by intimately mixing the monomer and/or prepolymer with the fillers and the desiccant, and adding the dry initiator system last. Examples disclose mixtures of (1) an air drying polyester resin, an amine containing polyester resin, styrene, barium peroxide/cobalt octoate (initiator), a molecular sieve as desiccant and fillers; (2) polymethylmethacrylate dissolved in methylmethacrylate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, dry fillers, calcium peroxide initiator and powdered molecular sieve as desiccant; (3) polybutylacrylate in butylacrylate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate with barium peroxide initiator, and molecular sieve as desiccant and fillers, and (4) monomeric methyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol methacrylate, methacrylamide, barium peroxide, molecular sieve powder (desiccant) and fillers. The compositions are used as moisture-setting adhesives and cements. |
