The method involves regulating function of a vehicle intermediate distance (xobj) between the vehicle (F1) and before that a local vehicle (F2) depending on the driving speed (v) of the vehicle (F1) which has a selectable setpoint distance (dsoll). The distance setpoint (dsoll) is limited to a range of values above a depending on the width (Bo) of the vehicle (F2) at certain minimum distance value (dmin). An independent claim is included for a driver assistance system for the implementation of the procedure.
