PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system easily manufactured and designed and capable of projecting a bright image with high contrast. SOLUTION: Illumination optical systems 2-7 guide a luminous flux emitted from a light source 1 to an image forming element 8 through an optical surface 7a having a light-splitting function, and conversion systems 2-4 are provided for converting the widths of luminous flux in a first cross section XZ and a second cross section YZ orthogonal to each other in the illumination optical systems, into widths of the luminous flux different from those before incidence.
