PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous coating material that forms a polymer emulsion and a coating film having excellent steam sterilization resistance, processability, adhesivity and corrosion resistance without using a BPA-derived constituent component at all and not substantially utilizing a surfactant being a causative agent to deteriorate steam sterilization resistance of cured coating film after baking and is suitably used for coating the inside of a can. SOLUTION: The aqueous coating material comprises a polymer emulsion (F) produced by radically polymerizing a component (A) to be emulsified containing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer (A1) with a cationic water-soluble radical initiator (E) in the presence of an aqueous solution or emulsion (1) of a polymer comprising a carboxy group-containing component (B) containing a carboxy group-containing acrylic copolymer (B1), a basic compound (C) and water (D).
