PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new alkenylbiphenyl derivative as a liquid crystalline compound having high TN-I and comparatively low viscosity as a tricyclic compound, and to provide a liquid crystal composition having low viscosity and a wide liquid crystal temperature range by using the derivative. SOLUTION: A compound represented by general formula (I) [wherein a ring A is a (fluorine-substituted) 1,4-phenylene group or a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group and a ring B is a fluorinated 1,4-phenylene group] is provided. As a liquid crystal composition using the compound has characteristics of a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range and high viscosity, it is useful as a constituent of a liquid crystal display element.
