PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ARTIFICIAL MARBLE

An artificial marble exhibiting the appearance of natural marble is produced. At least one member selected from among a fundamental intermediate piece obtained by crushing a composite material produced by subjecting a composition containing 15 to 40 wt.% of thermoplastic resin and 85 to 60 wt.% of hydrated metal compound to melting kneading under shear and solidification, a colored intermediate piece obtained by crushing a colored composite material produced by subjecting the composition together with a colorant to melting kneading under shear and solidification and first and second intermediate pieces with colored surface obtained by coloring the surfaces of the fundamental intermediate piece and colored intermediate piece in appropriate combination is charged into a heat shaping mold. The member is pressed into the mold by the use of a heat shaping press applied from upward. The member is melted and flowed to thereby attain integration. The colorant may be kneaded thereinto in spotted pattern. A surface layer of the colorant may be superimposed on the surface of the fundamental intermediate piece or colored intermediate piece in granular, flakey or aggregated form.
