The method involves feeding a photo-flash lamp (4) for optical pumping of a laser-active medium (2) within a pulse duration of appropriate time-frame with multiple electrical excitation pulses. A temporal set distribution of the intensity of a laser beam pulse (L) is selected. The initial values for a pulse mode of every excitation pulse are determined as a function of the selected set distribution. An independent claim is also included for a solid state laser operating in pulse mode.
