The present invention relates to the use of monocyte markers for diagnost ic, prognostic or theranostic applications during diseases and syndromes cau sed by HIV infection. More specifically, it relates to a method, comprising isolation of monocytes and determining gene expression, preferably PBEF1 gen e expression. Said method is useful to determine the evolution of the diseas e or can be used to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment.
