<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active material for a battery having a low environmental load, capable of being applied to an aqueous lithium secondary battery having an aqueous electrolyte and providing high charge/discharge cycle characteristics; and to provide the aqueous secondary battery using the active material for the battery. <P>SOLUTION: The active material for the battery contains titanium pyrophosphate having the basic composition of (TiO)<SB>2</SB>P<SB>2</SB>O<SB>7</SB>as a main component. The aqueous secondary battery 1 comprises a positive electrode 2 including a positive active material, a negative electrode 3 including a negative active material, and the aqueous electrolyte prepared by dissolving a lithium salt in water. In the aqueous lithium secondary battery 1, the negative active material contains the titanium pyrophosphate having the basic composition of (TiO)<SB>2</SB>P<SB>2</SB>O<SB>7</SB>as the main component.
