PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an automatic transmission of advance 6 speeds, by using only a single pinion type planetary gear set. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission has first-third gear sets 10, 20 and 30 composed of the single pinion type planetary gear set, and has first and second clutches 40 and 50 for respectively connecting a first sun gear 11 and a second sun gear 21, a first ring gear 14 and a second carrier 23, a second ring gear 24 and a third carrier 33, a third sun gear 31 and an input shaft 4, and a first carrier 13 and an output gear 7, and respectively connecting and disconnecting the input shaft 4, the first sun gear 11 and the second sun gear 21, and the input shaft 4, the first ring gear 14 and the second carrier 23, and first-third brakes 60, 70 and 80 respectively connecting and disconnecting a case 6, the first ring gear 14 and the second carrier 23, the case 6, the second ring gear 24 and the third carrier 33, and the case 6 and the third ring gear 34.
