<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar lighting system allowing a frame to be thinned while keeping high rigidity and dimensional accuracy, and thereby having sufficient mechanical strength in spite of being thin. <P>SOLUTION: This planar lighting system 10 has light sources 6, a light guide plate 5 for arranging the light sources 6 on the side end surface thereof, and the frame 4 holding the light guide plate 5. The frame 4 is composed of a sheet metal frame 2 and a resin member 3.
