PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing metal powder for a dust core where Si is uniformly concentrated only on the surface layer part of the powder, so as to increase molding density without causing deterioration in the compressibility of the powder, thus the metal powder for a dust core maintaining high saturated magnetic flux density and having improved electrical insulation properties by the increase of a binding power between an insulating material and particles can be obtained. SOLUTION: Pure iron powder having a diameter of 10 to 500μm and a purity of≥99 mass% is heated to a temperature range of 600 to 1,400°C, Si is concentrated to a depth range from the surface of the pure iron powder to 5μm by vapor phase reaction in the above temperature range, and the average Si concentration in the depth range is controlled to 0.05 to 2 mass%.
