PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for correctly and efficiently identifying a plurality of media which are disposed side by side when media and documents are identified by reading pattern images embedded in the media. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus includes an area setting unit 121 which sets an analytic area to be analyzed in an image read out of a recording medium, a partial image area selection unit 122 which sets a plurality of reference decoding positions within the analytic area at intervals larger than specified and selects partial images at the reference decoding positions, a decoding unit 123 which decodes identification information of the recording medium from the partial images, and an identification unit 124 which identifies the recording medium based upon the decoded identification information, wherein the area setting unit 121 sets a plurality of new analytic areas by dividing the current analytic area when a plurality of recording media are identified for the one analytic area.
