The invention relates to molecular biology, biotechnology, gene engineering and medicine and provides a multi-purpose method for extracting and purifying RNA, including diagnosis for routine analysis by DNA(RNA)-probe, RT-PCR an other methods. The RNA and DNA are extracted by using ammonium trichloroacetate in a neutral aqueous medium and a filter paper or cotton wool suspension for sorbing RNA and for removing proteins, low-molecular compounds and similar therefrom. The inventive method makes it possible to extract RNA from plant and animal viruses and from plant, animal and bacterial cells, wherein the yield and the purity of RNA preparations are identical to preparations produced by conventional methods using highly toxic and dangerous reagents. In addition, said invention provides for the use of ammonium trichloroacetate in the form of a multipurpose agent for dissociating natural complexes formed by nucleic acids.
