PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonionic surfactant soluble in a high concentration alkali aqueous solution and having high defoaming effect in an alkali detergent. SOLUTION: The defoaming agent for the alkali detergent comprises a compound (A) obtained by adding ethylene oxide to a 8-22C bivalent aliphatic alcohol and a compound (B) obtained by adding ethylene oxide to an amine having 1-5 activated hydrogen atoms and having HLB of 10.0-16.0, wherein the weight ratio of the compound (B) to the compound (A) is 0.5-4.0.
