The apparatus comprises a cutting apparatus (20), which produces a fluid jet (22) cutting the object and at least one light source (30) by means of which the fluid jet (22) is illuminated. The object to be cut with the fluid jet (12) is a web (12) moving in a web-forming machine, hi a normal situation, light is visible as a uniform chink of light in the fluid jet (22). If the fluid jet (22) becomes beaded, the light scatters in the fluid drops. Then, an outside observer will not see a uniform chink of light in the fluid jet (22). The light facilitates the observation of flaws possibly occurring in the fluid jet (22) as early as possible.
