PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus having a plurality of light sources, which can read an image by restrictedly operating abnormal light sources even if some light sources have abnormality. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus equipped with: xenon lamps 7, 8, 10, 11 working as light sources for illuminating an original has a CIS 9 for reading the image of the original to be illuminated by the xenon lamps 7, 8, 10, 11; a specific region image signal processing section 26 for processing the output value of the image signal read and outputted by the CIS9 on the positions corresponding to each of the xenon lamps 7, 8, 10, 11; and a control section 25 for controlling the turning-on or off of each of the xenon lamps 7, 8, 10, 11 on the basis of the output voltage. If the control section 25 judges that any one of the xenon lamps has an abnormality on the basis of the output value, restriction is placed on the original reading mode.
