PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device for red light emission such that initial deterioration in luminance life can be suppressed. SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent device emitting red light, a light emission layer contains a host material whose mother skeleton is made of a 4-7 membered ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound as well as a red light emitting guest material. A hole transporting layer has a laminate structure of different materials, and a second hole transporting layer adjacent to the light emission layer is formed using a material represented by general formula (1).
