PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect a position of a servo piston constructing inclined rotation control mechanism of the variable displacement hydraulic rotary machine with a simple mechanism. SOLUTION: A piston storage part 11 having a servo piston 12 installed thereon is provided in a main body casing provided with a cylinder block 3 and a swash plate 2. A control pressure chamber 16 is formed at the piston storage part 11, and a detection chamber 30 is provided between the control pressure chamber 16 and a tank pressure chamber 22 in which tank pressure acts. Restriction channels 32a-32c as variable restrictions of which channel areas vary according to displacement of the servo piston 12 are provided between the detection chamber 30 and the control pressure chamber 16. The detection chamber 30 and the tank pressure chamber 22 are communicated via a fixed restriction 31, pressure in the detection chamber 30 is detected, and position of the servo piston 12 is detected based on pressure fluctuation thereof.
