A method for detecting the presence of or an elevated risk of developing age related macular degeneration (AMD) in a subject includes obtaining a biological sample including factor H from the subject and detecting whether the factor H exhibits aberrant factor H function, which is not based on a genetic mutation of factor H; wherein the detection of aberrant factor H function correlates with the presence or an elevated risk of AMD in the subject.
