PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which comprises independent original platen glasses for skim-through reading and book reading, respectively, improves precision of document reading due to a contact type image sensor so as to obtain a high-quality image and is also capable of suppressing a large size of the apparatus. SOLUTION: A still document platen glass 6 and a feeding document platen glass 18 are provided to have an inter-glass step and when a contact type image sensor 16 as a reading means moves between the still document platen glass 6 and the feeding document platen glass 18, the contact type image sensor 16 is moved up and down by a polymer actuator 21 to surface positions corresponding to the feeding document platen glass 18 and the still document platen glass 6, respectively. After a feeding document is read on the feeding document platen glass 18, the polymer actuator is elongated to push down the contact type image sensor 16, thereby providing a state where the contact type image sensor 16 can be moved for reading a still document on the still document platen glass 6.
