<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly which has an electrolyte membrane and a pair of electrodes and in which the electrolyte membrane has a high softening effect and contains a hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte and a plasticizer having an excellent compatibility with the hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte and is hard to be broken and has durability against an external stress. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly is provided with an electrolyte membrane which contains a polymer electrolyte containing a repeating unit with an aromatic ring, at least a part of which has a proton conductivity and a plasticizer composed of a copolymer containing a repeating unit as shown in the formula (1) and a repeating unit having the aromatic ring.
