PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera with a face detecting function which detects in a short time focal positions to a plurality of face images which are each different in distance, and obtains focus on the positions when it detects the face images concerned. SOLUTION: The camera with face detecting function is provided with; an imaging means which picks up the images of objects formed by an imaging optical system including a group of focus adjusting lenses; a face-detecting means which detects face images on the basis of image signals picked up by the imaging means; a focus adjusting means which executes focus searching which picks up images at a plurality of different positions by means of the imaging means, while moving the group of focus adjusting lenses along an optical axis, and detects focal conditions on the basis of the image signals which correspond to the respective detected face images at the plurality of positions at which the imaging is made; and a control means which finds average values of the areas of the detected face images when the face-detecting means detects the face images, and makes the focus adjusting means execute the focus search processing in a direction from a near position to a far position when the average values are at least a prescribed value, and makes the focus adjusting means execute the focus search processing in a direction from a far position to a near position when the average values are below the prescribed value.
