PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a foreign-matter detection apparatus capable of effectively selecting and discriminating foreign matter from a fluid containing pulp or a granular substance, the foreign matter being a target of detection, and eliminating the foreign matter. SOLUTION: The foreign-matter detection apparatus 10 detects a foreign matter in a detection channel 15 of a channel plate 16 by causing a CCD line sensor 40 to scan the detection channel 15. That is, the foreign-matter detection apparatus 10 includes the CCD line sensor 40 that senses the luminosity of a fluid in the detection channel 15 by scanning the detection channel 15 in a direction orthogonal to the detection channel 15 and a signal processing section 31 that detects the foreign matter by processing image signals from the CCD line sensor 40. Among these, the signal processing section 31 sorts out image signals from the CCD line sensor 40 for every unit mask predetermined according to the size of the foreign matter and determines the presence of foreign matters in accordance with a relationship between the average of image signals sorted out for every unit mask and a predetermined threshold (slice level).
