PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyimide having high transparency, extremely high film toughness, high glass transition temperature and solution processability, and being useful as an electric insulation film in various kinds of electronic devices, an LCD transparent substrate, an organic electroluminescent display transparent substrate, an electronic paper substrate, a solar battery substrate, a protection film of a semiconductor element and an inter-layer insulation film, especially a flexible LCD plastic substrate, its precursor, and a new ester group-containing tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride which is the material of the precursor. SOLUTION: The ester group-containing tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is represented by the formula (1) or (2). The polyimide precursor has a repeating unit represented by the formula (3) or (4) in at least a part. The polyimide has a repeating unit represented by the formula (5) or (6) in at least a part.
