Even if an echo chancellor using an adaptive filter is under a condition that the system transmission delay is not constant, an appropriate delay time is set in a delay circuit capable of absorbing the system delay so as to produce a marked echo cancelling effect at all times. The time difference of the transmission path until the reproduction sound signal inputted to a delay circuit is inputted through the space from the speaker to the microphone as a processing subject signal of an adaptive filter system is obtained, and the delay time corresponding to the time difference is set in the delay circuit. When the distance between the speakerand the microphone is set short and the delay time of the delay circuit is set zero, the obtained time difference indicates the system transmission delay of the transmission path. Namely, a delay time corresponding to the system transmission delay can be accurately set in the delay circuit.
