PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a perpendicular magnetic recording head having excellent external magnetic field resistance and preventing unintended recording and erasing to/from a recording medium. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording head having respective front edge faces exposed to a face facing a recording medium and having a main pole layer and a return yoke layer laminated on the medium facing surface through a nonmagnetic material layer is provided with an edge part magnetization control layer for generating an exchange coupling magnetic field for directing magnetization at both edge parts to a track width direction on or under the both edge parts of the return yoke layer in a track width direction.
