The device (1) has a sensor device (2) comprising a sensor for receiving physical data, and a switch output (3) comprising an output terminal coupling the switch device to a communication link (7). A control device (4) provides a control signal for monitoring and activating the switch output in such a manner that the switch output operates as a binary switch, in a transfer mode, in a direct current operation, and outputs signal level sequences characterizing different switching conditions in another transfer mode. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a switching device.
