<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit that is thin and lightweight and ensures high luminance and high luminance uniformity, and to provide a video display device using the backlight unit. <P>SOLUTION: The video display device is equipped with a backlight unit including a plurality of light sources (1) arranged in a plane, a reflecting part (3, 4) for reflecting the light from the light sources and a diffusing part (5) for diffusing the light from the light source and the reflected light on the reflecting part. The reflecting part includes a diffusive reflecting part (4) that diffuses and reflects the light from the light sources.
