PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head for high density recording, wherein reproduction instability such as reproduced output variation due to operation during recording is reduced, and high mass productivity and reliability are ensured. SOLUTION: In the thin film magnetic head constituted so that both end parts of track central parts of a lower part magnetic shield 2, an upper part magnetic shield 4, and a lower part magnetic pole 6, recede from a floating plane, receding quantity P1R from the floating plane 17 of the lower part magnetic pole 6 is made smaller than receding quantity S2R from the floating plane 17 of the upper part magnetic shield 4. A width P1FW of the floating plane of the lower part magnetic pole 6 is made larger than width S2FW of the upper part magnetic shield 4. Thereby, flow-in of magnetic flux for the upper part magnetic shield 4 and the lower part magnetic shield 2 by a magnetic field of a recording coil 13 is reduced, and reproduction instability is improved largely.
