An improved method for sealing a cylinder head onto an engine block has the upper end of each cylinder sleeve (4) with a stepped profile which locates radially outside a lipped extension (8) of the cylinder head (3). A first ring seal (9) is positioned between the adjacent faces of the lipped extension and the upper profile of the sleeve. A second ring seal (12) is radially outside the sleeve and is compressed between the engine block and the cylinder head. The inner face of the lipped extension is flush with the inner face of the cylinder sleeve.
