The method involves moving a sheet material (2) from a supply station (5) into a printing station (3). The sheet material is further moved using a transport device (18) in a transport direction (4). The sheet material to be imprinted is arranged in the transport direction in an inlet area in the printing station directly one behind the other in a row. The sheet material is moved during a printing process through the printing station. The printed design is applied using an ink jet printing device (13).
