An aqueous composition for treating arteriosclerotic, atherosclerotic and related metabolic diseases comprises procaine, procaine hydrochloride, butacaine sulphate, tetracaine hydrohydrochloride, hexylcaine, lignocaine hydrochloride, phenacaine hydrochloride, lidocaine, ethylaminobenzoate, butylaminobenzoate, heptocaine, dibucaine, chloroprocaine, procaine borate, another ester of animobenzoic acid, a tertiary amine ester of an aromatic acid or the salts of these esters and a hydrolysis-inhibitor selected (from polyvinylpyrrolidone, metbylcellulose, dextran, gelatin, and polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate; the composition having a pH of 4-7. Compositions containing 20% or more by weight of propylene glycol are disclaimed.
