[Also in Divisions C2, C3, C6, D1 and D2] Skin and face ointment and sun-tan oils and lotions contain as ultra-violet screening agent a phthalazone derivatives of the formula: wherein A is one of the groupings of the formula: R 5 and R 6 each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, halogenoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl. alkoxyalkyl, alkyl-O-CO-alkyl, alkyl-CO-O-alkyl, carboxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, halogenophenyl, alkoxyphenyl, alkylphenyl or alkylhalogenophenyl radical; and each of R 1 to R 4 is a halogen atom, a cyano group, R 5 ,-COR 5 ,- COOR 5 or R 1 and R 2 , R 2 and R 3 or R 3 and R 4 may represent a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring; the aromatic residue containing the radicals R 1 to R 4 optionally containing one or more heteroatoms and at least one of R 1 to R 6 being other than hydrogen.
