R2BiX is prepared from R3Bi and BiX3 in the presence of an inert aromatic hydrocarbon diluent, where each R is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, which may have inert substituents, and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine. The diluent may have a boiling point between 110 DEG C. and 180 DEG C. and be present in an amount of from 0.4 to 1.0 parts by weight per part of R3Bi. Examples are toluene, xylene as a commercial mixture of isomers, ethylbenzene and mesitylene. R groups specified are phenyl, tolyl, xylyl and mesityl, with or without methyl or ethyl groups as inert substituents. Preferably all the R groups are the same and phenyl, and all the X groups are the same and chloride. The reaction may be carried out at the reflux temperature of the diluent and in the presence of an inert gas such as nitrogen. Yields of pure R2BiX of at least 95% may be prepared in less than an hour. |
