A method of detecting the start of sustained combustion in the engine of a hybrid electric powertrain is disclosed in which cranking of the engine (14, fig.1) by an electric machine, eg a starter/generator (18) is continued until a sum of the crankshaft torque applied by the starter/generator and the crankshaft torque applied by a transmission (16) is less than a torque threshold for a predetermined period of time. During cranking, engine operating parameters such as spark and fuel are activated and the input clutch (40,45, fig.2) between the starter/generator and the transmission is held in a slipping state until engine is judged to have started whereupon the clutch is engaged fully. The method is useful for powertrains in which the engine has a continuous connection with the electric machine, eg crank-integrated (CISG) or belt-integrated (BISG) starter/generator systems. |
