Prodn. of copolymers whose chains consist alternatingly of acrylic acid and comonomers is characterised in that corresponding maleic anhydride copolymers are converted in aqueous soln. into monoalkali salts and decarboxylated at 120-300, pref. 150-200 degrees C. This is followed by acid treatment in order to precipitate the copolymer.
