A portable apparatus for converting a voice to characters, and a method therefor are provided to store the contents of conversation or the contents mentioned in a conference in a document type. A portable apparatus for converting a voice to characters comprises the followings: voice receiving unit(200) sending voice signals through the voice reception; a voice-to-text converting part(300) expressing the voice signals with characters; a memory(400) in which conditional information required for the voice-to-text conversion is stored; and a controller(100) which determines when the voice-to-text conversion is needed based on the conditional information stored in the memory, and stores characters, converted through a voice recognition unit and the voice-to-text converting part, in a character region of the memory.
