To ensure that the spacing between the non-load bearing flanks of a nipple 1 are spaced evenly from the adjacent socket thread flanks of each electrode section, the nipple 1 is initially threaded into electrode section 2 until it is hand-tight, axial pressure is applied in the direction of separation of the nipple, 1 and electrode section 2. The nipple is unscrewed slightly and then whilst the axial pressure is maintained is secured positively in the adjusted position. As shown, the nipple 1 is screwed into a centering jig which has castors 19 forced into engagement with the butt face 4 of electrode section 2 by air cylinders 17. The nipple is maintained in its adjusted position by injecting cement, paste, binder or filler through a longitudinal hole 8 in the nipple to fill a cavity 5 between the base of the nipple and electrode section and allowing it to set. Transverse pins through the electrode sector walls may be used to secure the nipple in position instead.</p> |
