The exhaust line (1) has a by-pass pipe (3) placed in parallel to a heat exchanger (2). An exhaust gas flow directing unit (4) is constituted by a three-way valve (7) arranged downstream of an upstream pipe (5) forwarding exhaust gas. The valve includes a check valve that directs gas through the heat exchanger in one position and directs gas through the by-pass pipe in another position.
