PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toggle type mold clamping device, which is high in mold opening and closing speed and sufficient in mold opening amount, regardless of being light and compact, and in which even mold clamping force acts onto mold. SOLUTION: The toggle type mold clamping device is constituted so that trajectories drawn by connected points (18 and 19) of the tip end parts of a short links (11 and 12) and long links (13 and 14) mutually go beyond the machine central surface C-C. A clearance space part (N) is constituted so that the links do not interfere with each other when the trajectories mutually go beyond the machine central surface. Also, the position where the short links are attached to an end housing (4) is arranged so as to be at a distance practically the same as the distance from the machine central surface to tie bars (5 and 5), and the position where the long links are attached to a movable plate (3) is arranged so as to be at a distance shorter than the distance from the machine central surface to the tie bars.
