PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope which has a high freedom of optical design without increasing the size and is used by switching direct viewing and lateral viewing. SOLUTION: The endoscope which is used by switching a direct viewing observation and a lateral viewing observation includes a mirror 11 which reflects the light for bending an optical path of either the direct viewing or the lateral viewing in the case of either the direct viewing for observing the incident light to the front of the distal end part of the endoscope or the lateral viewing for observing the incident light to the side surface of the distal end part, a first movable lens 17a, and a mirror moving member for making the mirror 11 retreat from the other optical path of the direct viewing or the lateral viewing in the other case of either the direct viewing or the lateral viewing. The mirror moving member moves the first movable lens 17a in a manner to dispose the first movable lens 17a on the optical path for the direct viewing in the case of the direct viewing and on the optical path for the lateral viewing in the case of the lateral viewing.
