1,259,581. Continuous casting. SCHLOEMANN A.G. 2 Jan., 1970 [9 Jan., 1969], No. 287/70. Heading B3F. A mandrel for use in a mould 1 for continuously casting hollow bodies haslongitudinal recesses in its surface to reduce the transfer of heat to the metal (as the inner surface of the casting shrinks on solidification) and prevent gripping of the mandrel, which may also taper downwardly. The mandrel is mounted in a holder 2 through which cooling water is supplied to inner ducts- 13 for return up through outerducts 15 which contain displacers 16. Secondary cooling water is also supplied through a central duct 17 to spray nozzles 20 for cooling the inside of the casting below the-mandrel. The holder 2 has an asbestos jacket 12 and a lubrication ring 11. In a modification, the mandrel body is smooth and the surface recesses are provided by a corrugated sheet-metal jacket (22) which also creates the coolant riser ducts. |
