<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner achieving improved air conditioning efficiency without bringing discomfort by controlling an air blowout direction to avoid a location where there is a person when changing over to defrosting operation in heating operation or when temperature of blowout air is low in turning off a thermostat (a compressor is stopped) or in the early stage of starting the heating operation while improving the air conditioning efficiency by bringing air conditioning air to an area where there is the person when normal heating operation is performed. <P>SOLUTION: In the heating operation, movement of right and left blades are controlled within a range of the area where there is the person, and also upper and lower blades are so controlled that the air is directed to an edge portion on the side of an indoor unit in the area where there is the person. When the defrosting operation is performed or the compressor arranged in an outdoor unit is stopped, the right and left blades are so controlled that the air is directed to the area other than the area where there is the person, and also the upper and lower blades are controlled to be horizontally or upwardly directed.
