PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical access apparatus with a seal mechanism which is not limited by insertion forces for inserting an object or the ability to sustain integrity of a seal and does not generate fluid loss (e.g., insufflation gas loss) from the seal. SOLUTION: A surgical access assembly for sealed reception of an elongated object is provided. The surgical access assembly includes an access member having at least one opening and a seal member mounted relative to the access member. The access member defines a central longitudinal axis and is positioned within tissue to provide access to an underlying surgical site. The seal member includes an outer support layer and a plurality of flexible bristle members extending radially inwardly from the outer support layer to the central longitudinal axis.
