PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an actuator capable of improving accuracy of its abnormality determination. SOLUTION: An electric variable valve gear is mounted on a cylinder head and changes the maximum lift of an intake valve. A position sensor detects actual operation position of a variable valve gear. An electronic control device controls a variable valve gear to align the actual maximum lift with the target maximum lift set based on an engine operation condition, and determines that the variable valve gear is abnormal under a condition where a condition where discrepancy between the target maximum lift and the actual maximum lift is a predetermined quantity or more lasts for a predetermined period R. In the determination, the predetermined period R is set to be longer as cooling water temperature ThW is lower, and the predetermined period R set with corresponding to the cooling water temperature ThW is set longer as intake air temperature ThA is lower.
