PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoplastic resin with a sufficient molecular weight, which is started from biomass and is excellent in heat resistance, mechanical physical properties and weather resistance. SOLUTION: The thermoplastic resin includes a unit having a furan structure represented by the structural formula (1), with reduced viscosity (ηsp/C) of 0.48 dL/g or more and a terminal acid value of less than 200 μeq/g. The thermoplastic resin excellent in heat resistance and mechanical physical properties is produced by polymerizing a polyester using 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid producible from a plant-derived raw material such as xylose, cellulose or glucose which has been disposed as agricultural waste to a higher molecular weight, whereby an industrially useful material which can contribute to environmental problems, global warming problems, and food problems can be provided.
