PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of cooling a light source and its peripheral member by blowing an airstream against them when a carriage with the light source attached thereto is moved, and preventing the excessive rise of temperature in the light source without turning the light source off. SOLUTION: The image reading device includes: a transparent original base 2 to place an original; an image reading part 4 for reading the image of the original while moving under the original base; moving means 9, 12 for moving the image reading part; the light source 5 for radiating light to the original placed on the original base; and a control means 206 for controlling the moving means. The control means reciprocatively moves the image reading part when an image reading operation is not performed. Thus, the light source is cooled in the image reading device.
